Adding to our bike fitment ‘theme’ we searched for some of the coolest MTB-shoes currently available in South Africa. We specifically opted for entry level or mid-range shoes as prices tend to escalate to over R5k very quickly.


The first shoe on our list is from a world-renowned cycling brand, Shimano. They have been in business for decades and their latest XC7 shoe is a sales success.  The XC7 has an ultra-rigid, lightweight carbon reinforced midsole and it features high-density synthetic leather with perforated vents to improve overall fit. Specialized have a whole host of shoes in their range and the first one we are going to feature is the mid-range Comp. The Comp MTB mountain bike shoes take a whole lot of comfort, mix it with some serious pedaling efficiency, and add a layer of grippy trail traction for good measure. The result is a feature-packed and reliable all-mountain shoe that delivers the right mix of performance and durability for a variety of trail conditions. First Ascent is South Africa’s leading specialist outdoor gear manufacturer. Their Torque II MTB shoe is a great value for money product. It is durable, lightweight, tough and very comfortable. The upper is made from lightweight, breathable synthetic fiber. A ratchet buckle system with wide EVA strap makes the shoe fit securely and comfortably on your foot. Pedaling efficiency is enhanced through a stiffened nylon sole that ensures a maximum power transfer to your pedals. This is the ideal choice for the avid mountain bike rider. The Privateer™ R from Giro features a nylon and rubber co-moulded outsole for durability and improved grip on rocks or roots. The second shoe from Specialized is their even more affordable Sport MTB shoe. Remarkable performance and value make the Sport MTB shoes one of their best-selling pairs of mountain bike shoes. This durable, lightweight shoe features Body Geometry fit, comfortable offset Velcro® closures, and a sole with improved traction for hiking. This new Gaerne Laser MTB shoe is made with premium materials that give excellent qualities of comfort and good technical qualities. The upper is made entirely of soft microfiber with side mesh inlays, both helping to enhance the light weight and breathability properties of the shoe. The closure system is made with three Velcro straps. The shoe’s tongue is perforated for better internal airflow and features a high-tech cushioning layer for increased comfort. These Slate shoes from Louis Garneau are designed for those riders who never compromise on performance and they will push you to get out and conquer your next challenge. The Ergo Grip 2 outsole features removable studs designed to give great grip when you dismount. The upper is thermo-bonded for a seamless construction and minimal pressure points, while the offset velcro straps provide excellent heel support.
