Viljoen and Slattery conquer Demacon Max Wax

Saturday’s Demacon Max Wax mountain bike race held on the MTO Trails at Pull Scar in White River was a tight race with several cyclists missing out on key positions by a mere second, with Reinhart Viljoen and Claudia Slattery taking top spots.

Reinhart Viljoen took the lead in the 55km men’s race with Arno Mathee giving chase.

This was the second event in the four part mountain bike series that is being held across the Lowveld and Dullstroom this year. A light drizzle in the morning provided the ideal climate to take on the forest tracks that winded up and down White River’s plantations.

Event organiser Tanya Knight from Sunshine Events, said that the event’s thrilling routes made for a popular event, with single tracks providing a fun challenge to riders in the 30km and 55km category. “There were a few steep climbs in the 55km race, making it all the more challenging.”

Conquering the terrain and taking first place in the men’s 55km race was Reinhart Viljoen in a time of 1:58:59, followed by Igna de Villiers in 1:59:19 and Christo Carelsen hot on his heels in a time of 1:59:20. For the ladies it was Claudia Slattery who took first place in 2:34:35, Heila Meintjes second in 2:43:58 and Suzanne Mare third in 2:47:08.

In the 30km men’s race Gert Peens finished first in a time of 1:03:17, Jos Badenhorst second in 1:03:20 and Sibusiso Kgoedi third in 1:05:27. Michaela Twala took the ladies race in 1:05:19, followed by Dalene van der Leek in 1:08:55 and Julia Westoby in 1:11:57.

Christo Carelsen gives it his all in the last stretch of the Demacon Max Wax MTB last Saturday.

Thekgo Kgomo took first place in the 10km race in a time of 26:42, followed by Leroux van der Leek, one second later and Hector Kgomo in a time of 30:00. Hannie van Heerden grabbed the ladies titled with a time of 36:40, followed by Johanè Swanepoel in 41:34 and Rene Glorioso in 41:49.

The next event takes place in amid the cosmos-lined fields of Dullstroom on 27 April and the final at Casterbridge Hollow Hotel in White River on 18 May.
