1 000 Hills Expedition Series

A passion for mountain biking and the Valley of 1 000 Hills is the driving force behind Detour Trails latest series of expedition rides; the 1 000 Hills Expeditions. Over the years Detour Trails has been running day trips and tours through the area, encouraging more riders to get out & explore the myriad of natural trails right on their doorstep. Rohan Surridge, owner of Detour Trails, has tracked and mapped 100’s of kilometers in the Valley for his own passion and purpose.

As a trial to check if it is feasible 4 Detour explorers ‘raced’ the canoeists on the Duzi Non-Stop (in the February heat and high rivers!). We were blown away by the adventure and determined to share it with others during winter (to avoid drowning and potential snakes!).

Coincidentally with the shift towards self-navigation on the MTB horizon, the Detour Trails team decided to give riders an opportunity to experience proper expedition style riding for themselves, taking away the element of guiding and putting teams in the driving seat. Teams of 3 or more took part in the 3 expedition rides that started off small (48 km around Inanda Dam) and ended with the Big Daddy; the 115km non-stop ride from PMB to DBN following the Umgeni and Umsunduze Rivers.

If success is defined by the smiles on riders’ faces and the positive feedback, then the goal was achieved and the series is definitely on the cards for next year. If you missed out this time round, be sure to catch it in 2015.
