This weekend sees the hosting of the 2016 African Continental Mountain Bike Championships at the AfriSki Resort from 30 March to 3 April, high in the mountains of our neighbouring country, Lesotho. Both Cross-country and Downhill will be contested for Continental Honours as well as valuable UCI points. The organisers have also added a few other events to enable riders to enjoy a whole weekend of mountain biking.
After considering the Cycling South Africa Mountain Bike Commission’s 2016 Team Selection Criteria posted on the Cycling SA website, as well as noting that almost 100 South African riders have already entered the event, the Cycling SA MTB Commission has decided to follow the published criteria and not announce a specific selected team.
Cycling SA MTB Commission Director, Brett Coates, commented that after last weekend’s Stihl 2016 National XCO Cup Series race in the City of Tshwane, it is now apparent that with the season only half way it would be unfair to select representative riders at this early stage, particularly as there were a number of surprise results at Wolwespruit Bike Park, which may well indicate improving performance as we move closer to selection for the UCI MTB World Championships in June.
Cycling SA wishes all our athletes in Lesotho the best of luck and safe travels.
