19 June 2015 – The 2015 Stihl SA MTB Cup Series draws to a close when the final rounds of both XCO and DHI take place in a thrilling finale at Cascades MTB Park, KwaZulu-Natal, on 27-28 June. The mix of superb Downhill riders competing on the Sunday will provide for an electrifying event.
The first DHI round at Contermanskloof, Cape Town, saw Team Solid Reverse rider Stefan Garlicki (sponsored by Investec) take the Men’s Elite victory after a number of podium finishes but never the number one spot. Garlicki was over the moon with his win and credited it to his massive support base, more time on the bike, and the right frame of mind going in.
Sports Nut Team rider, Samuel Bull, won round two of the DHI Cup Series at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg, three seconds ahead of Tiaan Odendaal – no stranger to the podium himself.
Odendaal took the win in the third round at Mankele MTB Park in Mpumalanga, and a top three position in each round has placed him on the top of the series log with 650 points. On Sunday 28 June, Odendaal will compete to defend his overall cup series title.
Amongst the names placed near top of the log are Christopher Philogene (465 points), Sam Bull (443), Timothy Bentley (354) and Kelvin Purchase (351). Bull, Garlicki and Johann Potgieter are currently in Europe competing in World Cup and European Cup events, while Bentley will be in Canada and will not be taking part in the last round of the SA DHI Cup Series.
Stihl 2015 SA MTB Cup Series Results Co-ordinator, Grevile Ruddock, says: “While the top end of the Downhill Series is not as close as the XCO, there is still much that can change within the categories, and, with DHI perhaps being less predictable, we are certainly in for some exciting racing at Cascades on the 28th June!”
