Fourth Aramex Champions Race

The Aramex Champions Race in Kayamandi is all about bringing cycling and the Stellenbosch community to the home of the project and giving the community the opportunity to see what is all about.

It is officially the most surreal mountain bike race in the world with World, Olympic and national champions racing through the Kayamandi township.

This year will be the fourth Champions Race. It will take place on Wednesday 11 March, four days before the start of the Absa Cape Epic. The first two years it was a race only for the professional male mountain bikers, but since last year a women’s race and kids race have been added to the programme. The route that the race follows is extremely unique. Residents of Kayamandi can sit on their front steps and see the champions go past.

For Songo Fipaza, who along with Swiss world champion and Stellenbosch local Christoph Sauser started, it is the perfect opportunity to show everybody what the project is all about. is a social development program that provides sport and educational support to children, offering a safe place to play and grow, establishing values of accountability and responsibility, teaching goal setting and instilling in children the ability to dream and go out and achieve their goals.

For everyone who is part of the project it is very important that the local Stellenbosch community get involved. “It will be packed with lots of action on the very short lap around our clubhouse. It is a spectating spectacle for anybody but most important we bring cycling into Kayamandi, the home of our kids,” said Sauser. “It is a huge inspiration and pride for our youngsters and the best of them can even take part in this world-class field or simply spectate. For us professional riders it is one of the craziest and most unusual races. When do Olympic and World Champions race in an informal settlement in front of a huge cheerful crowd, a dynamic course, perfectly organised and with lots of media coverage? It is a once of a year showdown, probably the most special race out on the racing calendar!”

Andre Cronje from Aramex said: “Aramex believes that the best dividends on any investment is gained when a company invests in the future, especially the youth that is the future of this great country. not only operates out of Stellenbosch but also creates a platform for the youth to experience life and learning through mountain biking in the beautiful Stellenbosch area. Aramex is passionate about mountain biking, the youth as well as the larger community in Stellenbosch, who supports us on a daily basis. The Champions Race speaks for itself: Champions take to the streets of Kayamandi and race flat-out to provide the youth of Kayamandi with a better future. We are in the second year of sponsoring this unique race and we believe that it will be bigger and better than ever before. Cycling enthusiast must come and support the event and experience with us the vibe and thrill of a truly unique community race for Champions.”
