Gear: Ciovita Men’s Vindex Cycling Jacket and Gilet

Reviewer: Shayne Dowling

After a number of years of drought, it has been a welcome relief to have really heavy rains again in the Western Cape. This however has meant that the rain jacket has once again become an essential cycling kit item. While I have a thin windbreaker and it’s great for the odd shower it isn’t completely waterproof for those icy or really wet rides. The Vindex is certainly not just a waterproof jacket. It is a much heavier and thicker material. For the weight weenies, this doesn’t mean that you have to worry, it is still more that light enough for riding – and when it is pouring or really cold you will be grateful for the warmth that the jacket provides. The Vindex is really clever; besides the usual attention to detail we have come to expect from Ciovita, things like the clever hidden draw cord in the back pocket, reflectors and Lycra insets, the jacket transforms instantly into a gilet. The sleeves are cleverly attached to the main body by strategically placed magnets and you can remove the sleeves in an instant – even more impressive is how easy it is to put them back on! Once removed and stowed in the zipped rear pocket you have a functional, breathable gilet. The back is meshed to regulate heat and the gilet remains snug and warm for those iffy rain jacket off and on days. The jacket comes in black and looks good. They are bigger cut to wear over a couple of layers, remember this when ordering. I ordered my usual jersey size and could have easily gone down one size on the jacket. I have done a couple of rides in the pouring rain and the jacket works perfectly, it was also brilliant to be able to have the option of the gilet when the weather changes or I just left the sleeves at home on the drier mornings. Great two in one option!
