More than 300 riders are expected at the Mpumalanga finals of the Spur Schools MTB League at Mankele mountain bike park in Nelspruit tomorrow (Saturday, 22 August).
With a close point count amongst the leading riders in the senior categories, an action packed finals can be expected.
Although Lydenburg has a comfortable lead with 671 points, a battle is expected between Uplands College currently lying second with 344 points followed by Nelspruit High School in third with 320 points and Secuda fourth with 289. Rob Ferreira, Penryn College, Ermelo Christian School, Curro Nelspruit and Cambridge Academy in Witbank complete the top ten places on the log.
Registration opens at 07h00 with the first races setting off at 09h00 for the primary schools. Sub juniors start at 10h30, youth women and junior girls will race together at 11h30 and the youth boys and junior men will wrap up the day at 12h30.
Entry to Mankele is free on Saturday, but the normal rate of R60 to enter the race. All riders will receive a free burger, a finisher medal, a goody bag and a Spur Schools MTB t-shirt.
The Spur Schools MTB League, which was launched in 2009 as a joint initiative between Amarider and Spur Steak Ranches with 900 riders participating in 20 events, has grown to nearly 10 000 riders and 60 races. Schools from across Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa and neighbours Zimbabwe and Namibia is giving it their all to qualify for the finals at Bekker School in October. The action-packed finals will once again see schools as well as provinces competing for the coveted Spur Schools MTB League trophy and top spot on the provincial log.
