Kleinhans Claims Pennypinchers Karoo to Coast Victory

This year’s Pennypinchers Karoo to Coast took place on Sunday, September 21. The mostly downhill 95km from Uniondale to Knysna had 1560m ascent and 2280m descent.

With final preparations for the Cape Pioneer Trek in a couple weeks time, most of  SA’s MTB protagonists were present and accounted for. Team RECM and Cannondale Blend had strength in numbers, but lone riders Kevin Evans (The Bike Shop) and James Reid (Trek) were not to be discounted.

A group of 8 riders were together for most of the race, and after pacing back a couple of attacks for teammates Nico Bell and Lourens Luus, Erik Kleinhans’ had the legs to attack, and continued to open a gap as no one from the lead group responded. Kleinhans kept his head down and gambled on his attack to solo the final 40km to the win in Knysna in a time of 3:08’31”.

“I’ve tried and came close many times, could not be happier to step onto that Karoo2Coast top step at last!” said Kleinhans.

In the Women’s race, Robyn de Groot won in a time of 3:29’18” with Cherise Stander (Team RECM) finishing 3rd.
