Last chance to enter the Camdeboo Challenge

The inaugural CAMDEBOO CHALLENGE is a unique 100% free-range mountain biking event taking place from the 9th to the 11th October 2020. It takes place in the Camdeboo Conservancy, just outside Graaff-Reinet, in the Eastern Cape. Few get to experience the stunning views in this inaccessible heart of the Karoo.

It is not a race, rather an opportunity for all grades of mountain bikers to challenge themselves. Even the unfit can participate without the pressure of a cut-off time.   A back-up support vehicle is available to pick up the weary, and they may climb off whenever they are feeling strong enough to continue.

Members of the Camdeboo Conservancy are involved with hosting, accommodating and catering for the participants. Proceeds from the event are in aid of the Graaff-Reinet Hospice, who care for 90 terminally ill patients. Original, local artwork, homemade produce and woollen garments will be on offer, in aid of Hospice.

The entry fee of R3500 per cyclist covers the cost for guesthouse, Karoo farm home and Safari Lodge style accommodation, organic farm produce, all meals and drinks.

Registration takes place from 15h00 to 18h00 on Friday the 9th at Bothashoop, 45km from Graaff-Reinet and 55km from Aberdeen. Drinks, welcome, supper and race briefing constitute the proceedings before a good night’s rest in the Camdeboo.

After coffee and rusks and a healthy Karoo breakfast, the 65km Saturday morning ride starts at 7am.  The route includes the Perskeboomhoogte oxwagon pass, historical farms such as Kleinfontein, Houdconstant and Request before the breathtaking descent through Klipdrift, back to the starting point and the hub of the event.

After a restful afternoon soaking in the beauty of the Camdeboo mountains, the 25km sunset ride will allow cyclists to experience the beauty of a Karoo sunset. A Karoo lamb spitbraai awaits the cyclists under the starry night sky, while our local raconteur will share Camdeboo folklore stories.

An easy downhill start to Vrede farm on the Sunday morning is abruptly followed by a challenging climb out the mountain. For the lesser mountain goats, bikes and riders will be ferried to a more comfortable starting point. A breakfast station is provided for the cyclists on the contour road, where the views are awesome. The 40km cycle ends at the Bothashoop Hub with a delicious Karoo brunch followed by a Prize Draw to close the event.

E-bikes are welcome. No one should miss this stunning experience created for the adventurous at heart. Supporters are welcome to participate in this unique Karoo getaway weekend. R3000 per supporter includes accommodation, meals and drinks.
