Provincial champs for new MTB team

On the weekend of the 31st of May and 1st of June, at the Western Cape Cross Country MTB Championships held at Contermanskloof the new team of PSG Giant launched onto the scene with two Provincial Champions.

Jurgens Uys was crowned the U/23 Champion and youngster Carla Hollander is the new Sub-junior Champion. Another PSG Giant-rider Sonique Louw finished second behind Hollander.

Uys has been focusing mostly on marathon and stage races since the start of the season. He has spent 27 days racing, since the start of the year, and has managed to finish on the podium 12 times. “Cross Country racing is not really my strong suit. My love for the sport lies in marathon and stage racing. I am really happy with how things have been going thus far this season. I am taking a short break now, but will then focus on having a good second part to the season,” Uys said.

In Saturday’s race Uys (21) finished third overall behind experienced campaigners Renay Goustra and Nico Pfitzenmaier. “I prepared the same way for Saturday’s race as for any other race. It worked. I started at a good tempo and then upped my pace. I passed some riders and managed a good result. I am really glad that I could get the title for my new team sponsor PSG,” he concluded.

This was the first race the former team known as Team Contego Giant started as Team PSG Giant. Various other sponsors like Isostar, Giant, Mavic and Adidas Eyeware are involved on an official level. According to Schalk Louw from PSG Wealth: “It is great to partner an already successful team, with an extremely successful company like PSG. The main focus will still remain on developing young talent into world-class athletes. I’m really confident that with the strong support with great companies like PSG, Giant, Mavic, Adidas, Isostar and hopefully many more in the future, be able to put our local talent on the top steps of the international podiums.”
