Sports watch giant Suunto has joined the Absa Cape Epic sponsor family as the race’s official watch
sponsor, including providing a Suunto activation station at the 2016 race villages.
Offering product sales and information, free Suunto watch charging and data downloads as well as
service and backup facilities for riders and spectators over the eight days of the race, which starts
on 13 March.
“We are very pleased that Suunto and its world-class products have joined our team,” said Absa
Cape Epic CEO Lynn Naudé. “As a brand synonymous with conquering new territory, we look
forward to working with their team to bring valuable innovations and expertise to our race.”
Suunto has signed a three-year agreement, joining a host of other long-term sponsors.
Absa Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak – riding the race for the first time this year – will be
sporting a custom Suunto watch as he takes on the challenge. Suunto is internationally-renowned
for manufacturing cutting-edge “wearable tech” – sports watches, diving instruments, compasses
and other precision equipment.
Among many other features, Vermaak will be able to rely on Suunto’s battery life – up to 200
hours. He will also be able to connect his watch wirelessly to his smartphone and use the free
Suunto Movescount App to create a movie from the days riding as well as make any adjustments
the watch may need on the go.
Suunto Managing Director David Harrington said he was similarly delighted to be on board: “The
Absa Cape Epic has proved to be an excellent testing ground for all sorts of equipment over the
years and we believe it is the perfect platform to show off what our Suunto watches can do.”
He added that he and his colleagues looked forward to meeting riders and everybody associated
with the Absa Cape Epic at the Suunto activation: “The race has a deserved reputation for
excellence and we believe that makes it a great fit for our watches.”
Suunto’s headquarters are in Vantaa, Finland, and its hand made products are sold in over 100
countries.
