The 100 Bicycles project

Change a life though the 100 Bicycle Project

Warren Lodge of the ideas and communications agency LIFE brand’s 100 Bicycle Project has been has been named as an official project for the Cape Town World Design Capital 2014(#WDC421). 100 Bicycles aims to change the lives of citizens of improvised communities and CEO’s alike by getting them onto bicycles.

For the less financially fortunate a bicycle is a means of transport. It’s a way to reduce travelling time, increase productivity and save their hard earned money. While for a CEO the bike is a means to get outdoors, relax and improve their health. Through 100 Bicycles both seemingly polar needs can be met. By purchasing a Qhubeka bicycle for R4 000 companies can provide their employees with a means of transport for quick office errands or lunch runs, while Qhubeka donates another bicycle to someone less fortunate.

100 Bicycles comprises 100 yellow bicycles, branded with a unique word or phrase that highlights the myriad benefits of cycling within an African context. Some of these include creating new bicycle-based businesses (like food vendors and couriers), enabling healthcare workers to visit more patients, and minimizing traffic congestion and motor vehicle pollution. “Cycling is also a healthy, affordable, environmentally friendly form of exercise,” says Lodge, his aim “is for 100 businesses to buy a bicycle and instil a culture of cycling to work and sharing a communal bike to ride to meetings or to buy lunch.”

There’ll be more on the 100 Bicycle project in Full Sus in the coming months, but in the meantime check out their display at the V&A Waterfront’s Clock Tower shopping centre or online at www.lifebrand.co.za/100-bicycles.
