Yesterday I wondered into Cycles Direct in Sunningdale and spotted the 2016 Stumpjumper FSR proudly on display. It looks like an amazing bike, with a bulked out FSR linkage, SWAT storage integrated into the down tube and Specialized’s updated Command Seatpost. The Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon they had on display was priced at R86 999 (if memory serves).

Coincedently Specialized have sent out a press release with some more info on the 2016 Stumpie, and here it is…
WHAT IS NEW?
Trail riding encompasses all the sweet spots of mountain biking. Getting outdoors, climbing with friends, and descending amazing trails that make you want to giggle. We’ve lived the trail riding life since 1981, and the feeling we found with our first Stumpjumper has never been lost. We’re proud to continue the legend with the new Stumpjumper FSR.
THE TRAIL LEGEND REBORN
There are three areas that are key to making the next generation of trail bikes:
HANDLING – trail bikes have to do it all, and do it all well. Equally focused on climbing prowess and descending capability, the Stumpjumper FSR is scared of nothing.
GEOMETRY – built from the ground up for 650b or 29” wheels
- Slacker head tube @ 67/67.5° and 150/135mm travel (650b/29” details)
- Shorter chainstays @ 420/437mm
- Same low bottom bracket height @ 335/336mm
EFFICIENCY – Pedaling & control are paramount to trail riding. We make sure that you get up & get down as fast as possible.
- FSR – Active & independent FSR linkage keeps the tire in contact with the trail. We further refined FSR for all-around trail performance, while staying with the ManFu design with full seat tube access, fully sealed cartridge bearings at every pivot, and easy to service hardware.
- Rx Tune – Working with our shock partners, every rear shock volume, compression, & rebound range has been meticulously tuned for the Stumpjumper FSR.
UTILITY – It’s more important than ever to be prepared for what the trail will dish out. We first introduced SWAT on the Epic, and now we’ve adapted the concept with the revolutionary SWAT Door.
- A SWAT cradle holds your EMT tool under the top tube.
- On the down tube, the SWAT Door unhinges so you can store what you need inside the Trail Chassis.
- FACT carbon Trail Chassis are built with storage in mind, while still delivering the perfect ride quality.
- SWAT wraps keep tubes, pumps, and CO2 cartridges in place and rattle-free.
- Full internal cable routing through easy-to-guide, molded carbon tubes protect your housing and eliminate tangling.
- Stock on all carbon models. Not all models come standard with the tool/wraps.
OTHER COOL DETAILS – We love details, so here they are:
- Line has been simplified—no more standard and EVO models. Just slack head tubes, low bottom brackets, and short rear ends across the line.
- Every model comes with the new Command Post IRcc, so that middle position is easier to find.
- Every model comes with full internal routing and Shimano brakes.
- Every 650b/29”model is 2x compatible, with the Taco Blade and our new seatstay & shock extension design.
- Every model comes with the wide Traverse rims for a better tire profile and more traction. Higher-end models come with Roval Traverse wheels.
WHAT ABOUT 6FATTIE?
We believe in the new 6Fattie system. Big time. These tires give you MORE traction & floatation for MORE control, speed, & fun. Utilizing our Trail Chassis and a 148mm rear end, we’ll offer the ultimate in control & traction on a full
suspension trail bike.
- FACT Carbon and M5 alloy options.
- Available in late winter.
Purgatory/Ground Control 6Fattie front/rear. We believe in Ride and Decide, & riding the different options will help you pick your favorite. Here’s a good starting point:
- 6Fattie = Control
- 650b = Nimble
- 29” = Speed
These new trail bikes took over two years to develop, while the new SWAT Door took almost five years to fully realize. Over all that time, though, the goal of making the best riding trail bikes has never been lost. We hope you’ll take the new bikes out on your favorite trail to see what they can do.
