The History of the Red Baron Tomato Trot & Cycle

The Red Baron Tomato Trot & Cycle provides an opportunity for those runners and cyclists based in town to get out into the countryside and experience the amazing training opportunities on offer just a short drive from home.

Now in its 21st year, the Red Baron Tomato Trot & Cycle Tomato Trot was founded on the premise that town runners are missing out on a great opportunity to experience the countryside while practising their sport. Three Brakfontein runners, John Brown, Rocco Kruger and Danie Bessinger (of Sunrise Park Run fame) got together with Ivan Dewing and decided to share their passion for running and the paradise in which they ran.  The rather unusual name originated from the environment in which the run takes place; through the tomato fields and farmlands of the Brakfontein area.

Thirty six runners turned out for the inaugural Tomato Trot 21 years ago – now we attract a field of over 2500 runners, walkers and cyclists!

Over its lifespan, the event has evolved to meet the requirements of the fitness community. Originally the race was a 15km run, and then a 15km walk and cycle were added. A few years ago, recognising the gap for a family orientated event in the area, a 5km fun run/walk/cycle was added. Last year, the team introduced a Cycling SA sanctioned, 55km, 35km, 15km and 8km mountain bike events.

The TFM Tomato Trot now provides an opportunity for the whole family to get out of town, enjoy amazing scenery and fresh country air and maybe even receive a bag of tomatoes.

All of the races start and finish at Lilyfontein School where there will be plenty of food and entertainment for support crews and athletes alike.
